01 / FIELD NOTES

Choose the base before the train

A rail station near your destination on a map does not establish a convenient final connection. Set out the actual station, bus stop or taxi pickup, arrival time and route to your accommodation. A coastal village with places to eat can simplify the evenings; an isolated country house or lodge needs a more deliberate transport plan.

Build a day you can complete

Look up current services for the travel date and day of the week, including the last return. Keep an alternative for a missed connection or a long walk in poor weather. Do not combine several distant attractions simply because they all sit within Northumberland. The North Tyne Valley, the castle coast and the Morpeth countryside are different daily travel patterns.

With a car: ask about the final approach

Confirm parking with the actual property, including any charge, limited spaces or alternative car park. A postcode can cover more than one entrance or lodge. Save the host's directions and arrival instructions before setting off. If your plans depend on an electric-vehicle charger, ask about its connector, booking arrangements and current availability.

Keep an evening option

A restaurant shown on a property page is not a guarantee of dinner at your preferred time. Check operating days and reserve when appropriate. For a self-catering lodge, plan supplies before arrival. Compare travel convenience alongside the room, especially if your party includes someone who cannot comfortably walk the last leg with luggage.
